Rights Respecting School

Timberley rights statement

847f20850691403ebe6cff88eec11398 1x1Timberley Academy is a rights respecting school where we learn about rights, through  rights and for the rights of all children.

Our yearly curriculum provides ample opportunities for the children to explore the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and we ensure that children’s rights are at the centre of our ethos, culture and environment.

Our school is made up of many different families, from a range of different backgrounds, contexts, faiths, beliefs and cultures. We strive to ensure every child is included, respected and listened to.

What is the Rights Respecting Schools Award?

The Conventions on the Rights of the Child consists of 54 Articles. A 'child' is defined as every human being below the age of 18.

The key provisions are :

  1. The right to childhood
  2. The right to be educated
  3. The right to be healthy
  4. The right to be treated fairly
  5. The right to be heard
  6. The right to be safe

By learning about the Convention our children can find out that:

  1. They have rights
  2. They should be informed about their rights
  3. They should be helped to exercise their rights
  4. They should be able to enforce their rights
  5. There should be a community of interest to advocate young people's rights

We follow the A,B,C,D, E Rights!

A is for All – All rights are universal.
B is for Birth- Everyone has these rights at birth.
C is for Cannot – Rights cannot be taken away.
D is for Don’t – They do not have to be earned, they are unconditional.
E is for Equal – All rights are equally important.

Know your Rights!

At Timberley Academy, we do many things throughout the school year to ensure our children and community are aware of their rights. Children learn more about their rights through assemblies and lessons, where we ensure that children are aware of the rights that they have, that they can talk about their rights with each other and the adults in their lives and that we are all working together to create a school environment where we all feel safe and happy to learn and play.

Steering Group

The steering group meets often and is made up of children and class teachers. All school stakeholders ensure values are reflected in our school vision and are central to our ethos and values.
